Logo and name of the Convention on Wetlands

Key information

  • The Convention logo was adopted at the 21st meeting of the Standing Committee (decision SC21.4)
  • The Secretariat of the Convention has communicated the logo to the States Parties to the Paris Convention for the Protection of Industrial Property and members of the World Trade Organization through the World Intellectual Property Organization, and this emblem is protected under Article 6ter of the Paris Convention.
  • The other versions of the logo are presented in the "Logo Library" and are available for use.
  • The Convention logo may not be used for commercial purposes.

Conditions of use of the Convention logo

Use by the Convention authorities

As the legal custodian of the logo, the Secretariat of the Convention authorizes all national Convention authorities (Administrative Authorities) to use the logo for official purposes and to promote wetland conservation and wise use. The Secretariat encourages the use of the logo by States Parties to the Convention, particularly in communication material (websites, leaflets, posters, etc.). The Secretariat is available to provide advice regarding the use.

Use by Ramsar Regional Initiatives

Ramsar Regional Initiatives are encouraged to use the Convention logo side-by-side with their own. Please refer to the graphic guidelines for details.

Use by International Organization Partners

Prior written authorization must be obtained from the Secretariat before any use is made of the Convention logo. Please contact info@ramsar.org.

Where the Convention logo is to appear with the logo or logos of partner organizations, please refer to the graphic guidelines for details.

Use by other entities

Any individual or entity who wishes to use the Convention logo for non-commercial purposes, to show their association with the Convention  in the country in which they are based, should seek the approval of the national authority responsible for the implementation of the Convention. 

Any individual or entity in a country that is not a Contracting Party to the Convention, should seek the approval of the Secretariat at info@ramsar.org

Examples of the Convention logo use for non-commercial purposes, which need to be approved by the national authority:

  • Non-commercial publications,
  • Printed materials (such as flyers, brochures, posters, etc.),
  • Non-commercial promotional products (such as T-shirts, stationery, etc.),
  • Postage stamps,
  • Banners,
  • Websites.

Use of the flag of the Convention

  • The flag is a formal representation of the Convention on Wetlands.
  • The flag is a ceremonial object at each meeting of the Conference of Contracting Parties (COP), where it is handed to the host country of the next COP.  At each meeting of the Conference of Contracting Parties, the flag is flown and displayed at the venue.
  • The flag also marks the presence of the headquarters of the Secretariat of the Convention in Gland, Switzerland, and this is the only location where the flag may be permanently displayed. 
  • The flag can be displayed at official Convention events.

The name of the Convention

The Full name of the Convention as registered with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) is Convention on Wetlands of International Importance especially as Waterfowl Habitat. The officially registered short name is Convention on Wetlands.
