Wetlands presence at the Nature Solutions Pavilion at the COP21 in Paris
Today governments from over 190 countries gathered for the 21st session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP21) to deliver a historic new global climate agreement.
Natural ecosystems such as forests, river basins and wetlands absorb and store carbon; such land-based ecosystems store almost three times the amount of carbon found in the atmosphere. Meanwhile healthy oceans absorb over 25% of annual carbon dioxide emissions.
Conserving, restoring and sustainably managing these ecosystems can generate nature-based solutions to climate change while providing other important economic, social and environmental benefits.
The Nature Solutions Pavilion at COP21 was designed to highlight the importance of nature-based solutions and especially wetlands in climate change mitigation. The Pavilion is coordinated by the IUCN-France Partnership and hosts exhibits by a number of French ministries (Foreign Affairs and International Development, Ecology, Sustainable Development, Energy and Overseas Territories, French Development Agency) and other French environmental and wetlands-related organizations.
With the financial support from ONEMA (French National Agency for Water and Aquatic Environments), MedWet, the Ramsar Convention’s Regional Initiative, ensured the participation of the key French wetlands-related organizations in COP21. Wetlands will be featured in ten conferences, four of them related specifically to Mediterranean wetlands.
These ten conferences are open to the general public and are free of charge. They will take place in the Nature’s Solutions Pavilion (Zone A) and the Climate Generations Areas.
