STRP Webinar Series

Dear all,

In line with our World Wetlands Day theme (Wetlands and Agriculture), please join us on Tuesday 18 February, from 11:00 AM - 12:00 PM EST (17:00-18:00 CET) for our fourth STRP webinar on Wetlands, Agriculture and Sustainable Livelihoods in Africa by Dr Adrian Wood.

Webinar Details
Title: Wetlands, Agriculture and Sustainable Livelihoods in Africa by Dr. Adrian Wood
Date: Tuesday, February 18, 2014
Time: 11:00 AM - 12:00 PM EST (17:00-18:00 CET)

Abstract:
Linking to the theme of World Wetlands Day 2014, this webinar reviews experience with agriculture in small inland wetlands in Africa and proposes a new paradigm for wetland work. It argues that people must be at the centre of wetland thinking and that to sustain their future these wetlands must generate livelihood benefits for communities. For many of these African wetlands, agriculture is the major use and these areas are now becoming part of a new agricultural frontier, especially in the face of rural poverty and harvest disruption as a result of climate change. To ensure the sustainable use of these areas agricultural development must be managed carefully within a context of trade-offs that maintain an appropriate balance of ecosystem services in the wetlands and supportive land use in the catchment. Development of such a Functional Landscape Approach must be in the hands of the communities, who have considerable knowledge of these areas and whose local institutions must be the basis for enhanced and sustainable land management.  The webinar draws on experience gained from nine case studies from different parts of sub-Saharan African and presented in the recently published Wetland Management and Sustainable Livelihoods In Africa (Earthscan, 2013). The Webinar is hosted by Professor Adrian Wood the lead editor of the book.

This webinar will be recorded and posted on the STRP Portal. For past webinars, please visit the STRP Portal at: http://strp.ramsar.org/strp-publications/strp-webinars.

Webinar synopsis
The earliest human settlements, which evolved and grew into the first prosperous cities, depended intrinsically upon wetlands and the benefits provided these nascent urban populations.  Today, there is unequivocal evidence that well-planned and managed cities can be dynamic forces for good, driving economic and social prosperity at a lower per capita impact on the environment than other forms of settlements.  However, the symbiotic relationship between towns or cities and wetlands is reaching a tipping point.  At some period over the last 10 years the human species shifted from being one that predominantly inhabited rural environments to becoming an urban creature.  Today, more than 50% of all humans now reside in towns and cities.  This percentage is increasing, and increasing most rapidly in less developed countries especially in Africa.  At around the same time as human population passed this significant Rubicon, the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment published the sobering fact that the loss and degradation of wetlands is more rapid than for any other ecosystem.

The concerns regarding unplanned and unregulated urbanization and wetland loss and degradation have been echoed through numerous intergovernmental resolutions and decisions.  Resolutions adopted by inter alia the Convention on Biological Diversity, the Ramsar Convention and UN Habitat have all recognized the need to promote the conservation, management and restoration of ecosystems, and especially wetlands, in order to assist the delivery of sustainable urbanization.  Such resolutions acknowledge that the impacts of poorly planned urbanization can generate both direct and indirect negative consequences on wetland ecosystems.  Whilst the impacts to threatened and rare species are of concern, there are also commensurate impacts on the well-being of human society which invariably impacts greatest on the poor and those living in fragile communities.

This webinar will review the historical, current and future trajectories of change regarding urbanisation and wetland ecosystems and will highlight the intergovernmental drivers which are seeking to deliver a more sustainable course for both cities and their wetlands.  The talk will focus attention on recent initiatives undertaken by the Ramsar Convention in collaboration with UN Habitat in West Africa which are seeking to deliver a more sustainable future for both human society and the wetlands upon which they intrinsically depend. It will also summarise some of key issues included in the forthcoming Ramsar Convention’s Scientific and Technical Review Panel’s Briefing Note on Managing urban and peri-urban wetlands for human well-being.

Speaker’s biography
Rob McInnes is an independent Chartered Environmentalist with over 20 years experience in wetland-related environmental reseach, consultancy and conservation. His main interests lie in three key areas: understanding the ecosystem services provided to human society by wetlands; the practical restoration and creation of wetlands for multifunctional benefits; and the development and implementation of wetland conservation and wise use policies and strategies. He has worked on projects both within the UK and internationally and has knowledge extending across a range of wetland types.

Rob serves on the Ramsar Convention’s Scientific and Technical Review Panel as the representative of the Society of Wetland Scientists and is currently Task Lead on Urban Wetlands. He also regularly provides technical assistance to a range of UN bodies including UN Habitat, UNESCO and CBD, as well as for NGOs such as Wetlands International and IUCN. He is a former President of the European Chapter of the Society of Wetlands Scientists and in 2011 was awarded the President’s Service Award for the significant contributions he has made in promoting the goals of the Society. Rob is Managing Director of RM Wetlands & Environment Ltd, an independent environmental consultancy dedicated to the wise use of wetlands.

STRP Webinar Series: Looking forward to the future of wetlands – a vision from the new Secretary General of Ramsar

Dear Workspace Members,

Please join us on Friday 24 January 2014, from 14h00-15h00 (CET) (or 8h00-9h00 (EST)) for a webinar by Ramsar Secretary General Christopher Briggs on “Looking forward to the future of wetlands – a vision from the new Secretary General of Ramsar.” The webinar will introduce the new Secretary General as well as his vision for the future.

Speaker’s biography

Christopher Briggs was appointed Secretary General to the Ramsar Convention in April 2013. His interest and involvement in wetlands began while he was working for county wildlife trusts in England after completing his doctorate in Marine Biology from the University of Liverpool and a BSc degree in Zoology from the University of Exeter. Christopher has had a long career in sustainable development with a focus on water and land management, climate change, biosafety, biodiversity and ecosystem services. Among other roles, he joined the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in 1999 as Coordinator of the Eastern Europe and Central Asia environment team to manage Global Environment Facility (GEF) projects in Biodiversity and International Waters. In 2001, he joined the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) to help build capacity in developing countries on genetically modified organisms. He led the UNEP-GEF Biosafety Unit for six years, providing support to over 130 developing countries and increasing the reach and greater understanding of the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety to the Convention on Biological Diversity. Prior to joining the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands, Christopher Briggs was based in Panama as UNDP regional team leader for the Latin American and Caribbean region. The portfolio of projects included many based in Ramsar Sites. They covered all aspects of land management, including coastal and inland wetlands, and were designed to achieve long term financial support for the continuous supply of ecosystem services and biodiversity in the region.
