Following the adoption of Resolution XII.10 at the 12th meeting of the Conference of the Contracting Parties to the Ramsar Convention, in June 2015, and Decisions by the Standing Committee of the Convention at its 52nd and 53rd meetings (June 2016 and June 2017 respectively), the Secretariat of the Ramsar Convention has the pleasure to launch the call for applications for Wetland City Accreditation.
It is hoped that the Wetland City Accreditation scheme will encourage cities that are close to and dependent on wetlands, especially wetlands of international importance, to highlight and strengthen a positive relationship with these valuable ecosystems, for example through increased participation and public awareness of wetlands in municipal planning and decision-making. The Accreditation scheme should further promote the conservation and wise use of urban and peri-urban wetlands, as well as sustainable socio-economic benefits for local people.
Contracting Parties to the Convention may nominate a city within their territory for accreditation through their Ramsar National Focal Point or Head of Administrative Authority. Cities that are candidates for Wetland City Accreditation will be assessed by an Independent Advisory Committee, on the basis of the criteria contained in Resolution XII.10, which may be found at the following internet address: http://www.ramsar.org/document/resolution-xii10-wca.
