First meeting of the Open Ended Working Group on the Post 2020 Global Biodiversity Framework

Open Ended Working Group on the Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework met for the first time from 27-30 August 2019 in Nairobi, Kenya

The Ramsar Secretariat participated in the first meeting of the Open Ended Working Group on the Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework in Nairobi, Kenya from 27-30 August 2019.    

The aim of the meeting was to discuss the reports of consultations and other contributions to the post-2020 process as well as potential elements of the structure and scope of the post-2020 global biodiversity framework and the future work programme of the Open-ended Working Group and allocation of tasks to other intersessional bodies and processes.

The Ramsar Secretariat made two statements highlighting the importance of the post 2020 in the mid –term review of Ramsar Strategic Plan and the recent specific recommendations of SC57. The contributions of the Convention to a common post-2020 biodiversity framework, especially as the lead partner for the CBD Inland Waters Programme of Work and through the Joint CBD-Ramsar Work Plan were stressed among the key messages.

The main conclusions of the meeting include:

Senior Advisor for Latin America and Caribbean, Maria Rivera, highlighted the importance of the post 2020 in the mid –term review of the Ramsar Strategic Plan.

- the preparation of a zero draft text of the post-2020 global biodiversity framework six weeks before the second meeting of the Working Group;

- the invitation of UNEP as Chair of the United Nations Environmental  Management Group to facilitate the contributions of the United Nations system to the development and implementation of the post-2020 global biodiversity framework.
