Ramsar Senior Advisor for the Americas, Maria Rivera, attended World Wetlands Day celebrations in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.
To mark the World Wetlands Day 2018, the Ministry of Environment and the Academy of Sciences of the Dominican Republic published a special edition of the Verdor Magazine titled “Wetlands of the Dominican Republic and the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands”. The publication was launched on the 8th February by the Minister of Environment of the Dominican Republic, Francisco Domínguez Brito and the President of the Academy of Sciences, Luis Scheker Ortiz. The publication aims to increase the public awareness about the important benefits which wetlands provide. Ramsar Senior Advisor for the Americas was invited as a guest editor contributing a section about the Ramsar Convention as a tool to support country’s actions for wetlands conservation and sustainable management. Besides highlighting the importance of wetlands in the Dominican Republic, the magazine also features case studies of other wetlands in the region of Americas and the Ramsar Caribbean Regional Initiative. More than 200 participants representing Academia, governmental authorities, NGOs and the private sector attended the World Wetlands Day celebratory event.
