A new publication on páramos and high mountain ecosystems for Latin America
The Institute of Hydrology, Meteorology and Environmental Studies (IDEAM) of Colombia has recently published the title Páramos y Ecosistemas Alto Andinos de Colombia en Condición HotSpot y Global Climatic Tensor (Páramos and High Andean Ecosystems in Colombia Under HotSpot and Global Climatic Tensor Conditions), in the framework of the World Congress on Páramos, which took place in Paipa, Colombia, 13-18 of May, 2002. It is worth mentioning that the Congress received financial support from the Ramsar Convention's Wetlands for the Future Fund (WFF), as well as from Conservation International - Colombia.
This publication makes an important contribution to the body of knowledge on páramos (a unique high-mountain ecosystem found in the Tropical Andes Mountains) in relation to climate and anthropic changes, a topic tha
t will require further study in the near future. The issue is analyzed considering the Global Climatic Tensor (GCT) variable and HotSpot condition of this ecosystem in Colombia. The GCT variable relates how global climate change influences land use changes at the local level, while the consideration of Colombia's condition as a HotSpot (biodiversity, endemism and threats) gives additional relevance to this topic.
This publication will serve as an important reference for the study of high mountain wetlands in the Neotropics, and contribute to the implementation of the Resolutions adopted at the past Conference of Parties of the Ramsar Convention held in November, 2002, amongst them VIII.3: Climate change and wetlands: impacts, adaptation, and mitigation, VIII.12: Enhancing the wise use and conservation of mountain wetlands, and VIII.39: High Andean wetlands as strategic ecosystems.

Nueva publicación para Latinoamérica sobre páramos y ecosistemas de alta montaña
El Instituto de Hidrología, Meteorología y Estudios Ambientales (IDEAM) publicó recientemente el libro Páramos y Ecosistemas Alto Andinos de Colombia en Condición HotSpot y Global Climatic Tensor en el marco del Congreso Mundial de Páramos, llevado a cabo en Paipa, Colombia, del 13 al 18 de mayo del 2002. Cabe mencionar que la organización del Congreso recibió el apoyo financiero del Fondo Humedales para el Futuro (FHF) de la Convención de Ramsar, así como de Conservación Internacional - Colombia.
El libro hace una importante contribución al conocimiento sobre páramos en relación al cambio climático y antrópico, un tema que requerirá mayor atención en el futuro cercano. Esta cuestión es analizada considerando las condiciones Global Climatic Tensor (GCT) y HotSpot. La variable GCT se refiere a como las transformaciones globales influyen sobre el uso local del suelo, incrementando los procesos de intervención, mientras que la condición HotSpot (biodiversidad, endemismo y amenaza) de Colombia le da todavía una mayor relevancia a este tema
La publicación servirá como una importante referencia para ayudar a implementar las siguientes Resoluciones aprobadas en la pasada Conferencia de las Partes (Noviembre del 2002) en los humedales de alta montaña del Neotrópico: VIII.3: Cambio climático y humedales: impactos, adaptación y mitigación, VIII.12: Mejorar el uso racional y la conservación de los humedales de montaña, y VIII.39: Los humedales altoandinos como ecosistemas estratégicos.
