The Ramsar Convention on Wetlands
World
Wetlands Day 2008 -- Georgia
Young
Biologists' Association "Bio-Rhythm"
Georgia:
On 1-4 February 2008 the Young Biologists' Association "Bio-Rhythm"
has organized the eco-seminars in the schools of three villages: Supsa,
Grmagele and Tskaltsminda. These schools are located around the Kolkheti
wetlands (Ramsar site) in West of Georgia. The eco-seminars were organized
in the range of the project "Investment in Schools Around Supsa Terminal
(ISAST)", which is managed by CARE International in Caucasus. There
were formed Nature Clubs in mentioned schools and these clubs are involved
in permanent environmental activities. Eco-seminars covered the issues
of wetland importance, biodiversity of Kolkheti wetlands, migratory birds
of Kolkheti wetlands, etc. There were also discussed the issues of climate
change and how the behavior of population affects normal functioning of
wetlands. Nature Club member students decided to organize school conference
on the issues of Kolkheti Wetlands in order to further spread the information
about the importance of these unique wetland areas and to involve public
in their protection. They also prepared posters to be exhibited in their
schools.
