Wetlands Day 2006 in India
CELEBRATION
OF WORLD WETLANDS DAY 2nd FEBRUARY 2006
IN MANIPUR, INDIA
MAWETS (Manipur
Wetland Society) celebrated world Wetlands day, 2006 on 2nd February
with a State Level Students Seminar on Wise Use of wetlands of Manipur.
The seminar was organized by MAWETS as a part of its campaign to promote
wise use of wetlands of Manipur, especially lakes locally
known as Pats.
The seminar was held
at Imphal College and inaugurated by S. Ibohal Singh, honble MLA,
Th. Manihar, Project Director, LDA ( Loktak Development Authority), Smt.
P. Nalini Devi, Principal, Imphal college and W.Gokulchandra , President
, MAWETS. About 200 (two hundred) students from various schools and colleges
participated in this seminar. Fourteen selected students presented papers
on the theme Sustainable Development of the Lakes of Manipur
and cash prizes were awarded to all paper presenters. This event was widely
covered by National TV network, local cable network and local print media.
MAWETS have been
implementing various activities on Communication, Education and Public
Awareness (CEPA) for conservation and sustainable development of wetlands
in Manipur. MAWETS have been forging partnerships with various NGOs, CBOs
and CSOs in various areas of wetland and water management by providing
technical assistance and support in field activities.
