World Wetlands Day The Ramsar Convention on Wetlands

World Wetlands Day 2004 -- Greece -- Evros Delta

13 FEV. 2004

Dear Valerie,

The World Wetlands Day was very successful this year!

We (Evros Delta Visitor Centre) organize this event since 1998.

Since June 2001 the Centre is supported by the LIFE Programme "Restoration and Conservation Management of Drana Lagoon in Evros Delta".

For the last 3 celebrations of WWD I would like to thank you for your help. We liked especially that every year there is a different message for the celebration.

Last Monday and for the first time these years we celebrated WWD outside the Visitor Centre. We used a Multi-purpose building in the village of Loutros (2 km from the Centre) and its events room.

120 school children participated. They were all from the surrounding villages of Evros Delta.

The event included:

_ A 45min. video projection about the animals that live in the water
_ A slideshow about the values and products of Evros Delta (presented by a school girl)
_ Educational games
_ Environmental crafts for the children to make (a collage of Evros Delta, the "happy frog")

Parallel to the activities, the primary school of Anthia (local village) that participate on an environmental education programme about the wetland for two years, presented an exhibition about the "Products of the wetlands"

Two weeks before the WWD, we sent a message to all local schools, to make drawings with the meggage of the WWD. The children that took part on the celebration voted the best drawings that we collected.

Finally, posters, stickers and leaflets were given to every participant. I am sending you the poster we produced from the file you sent us, photos of the day and material from the Centre.

Best wishes, Eleni Makrigianni.
