World Wetlands Day 2002: Philippines



2002 WORLD WETLANDS DAY/PHILIPPINE NATIONAL
WETLANDS DAY CELEBRATION PLANNED ACTIVITIES
IN NORTHERN MINDANAO (REGION 10), PHILIPPINES

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources, Region 10 in Northern Mindanao, Philippines will be spearheading field activities to commemorate February 2 World Wetland Day Celebration generate awareness and people involvement near/within our wetland areas to wit:

1) Formal launching program for Baliangao Protected Landscape/Seascape, an ecologically significant 2,095 hectares coastal wetland area of which 76 hectare will be declared a marine sanctuary;
2) Coastal, rivers and lakes clean up drive;
3) Linkaging with Indigenous People communities living near/along wetland areas;
4) Tree plantings within mangrove sites and along degraded lakes and rivers;
5) Ecotours, site visits by government employee and students within significant wetland areas;
6) Conduct of lectures, environmental games and environmental skits within schools and local communities near wetland areas;
7) Symposia;
8) Production and mounting of streamers in strategic areas near wetlands for awareness campaign;
9) Media mileage - thru local radio & TV stations and come up with news article on Wetland conservation in local newspapers;
10) Coordination with private corporations/companies to adopt and preserve wetlands and resources near their areas;
11) Interpretive and regulatory billboards posting;
12) Marking of marine turtle nest sites in beaches;
13) Decloging, clearing, dredging of canals/drainage systems in localities;
14) Boating, swimming, snorkeling and scuba diving activities
15) Bird watching, migratory waterbirds, waders, seabirds monitoring in key wetland areas;
16) Information caravan and distribution of wetland conservation information materials;
17) Photo exhibit; and
18) Releasing of captive marine turtle back to its natural wetland habitat in Panguil Bay.

Region 10 covers five (5) provinces - Lanao del Norte, Misamis Oriental, Bukidnon, Camiguin and Misamis Oriental.
