The Ramsar Convention on Wetlands
World Wetlands Day 2001: India

The Punjab State Council for Science & Technology is working as a nodal coordinating agency for conservation and management of wetlands in the State. There are three wetlands ,namely Harike, Kanjli and Ropar, which have been included in the list of wetlands of national importance for their conservation with the support of Ministry of Environment & Forests, Government of India. Harike has also been included in the Ramsar List of Wetlands of International Importance. We have also prepared detailed information for Kanjli and Ropar Wetlands and submitted to the Ministry for nomination of these wetlands for inclusion in the Ramsar List.
I would wish to mention here that we are organizing a number of programmes for generating public awareness about the wetland ecosystems so that the public participation is enhanced to conserve and manage wetland resources. Recently we had celebrated Children's Day on 14th November, 2000 at Harike wherein more than 500 school children participated and poster making & slogan writing competitions were organized. Students showed great enthusiasm.
Now we are planning to celebrate World Wetland Day at the district and Inter-district levels in the State so as to promote wetland awareness among the children, youth and general public. While we shall be organizing on the spot competitions and shall also be distributing some literature among the participants, still we solicite support from Ramsar Bureau regarding supply of literature and other material. I shall appreciate if you could send some literature including posters, pamphlets, stickers, book marks, new brochures, etc and also if possible crests and other such material brought out by the Ramsar Bureau for distribution among the participants. This would help us in a long way.
Looking forward to hear from you.
