The Ramsar Convention on Wetlands
World Wetlands Day 2001: Australia

WETLANDS BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION
Wetland Care Australia, a national non government organisation, celebrated World Wetlands Day with people from all over the world. The international theme of World Wetlands Day 2001 was Wetland World a World to discover. Therefore the Watch a Wetland Project involved BIRDS AUSTRALIA and CONSERVATION VOLUNTEERS AUSTRALIA and aimed to help community groups discover their local wetlands and the bird species found there. All birds at several sites in the estuaries were to be identified by experts and recorded for the Birds Australia Atlas. Unfortunately record rains were received in the area that week and the day had to be cancelled. It was certainly a wetland week!
However on 2 February 2001 a birthday celebration was held at the office of Wetland Care Australia in Ballina, Northern NSW, Australia. The photo attached shows the Japan Australia Migratory Human Agreement (JAMHA) or the cutting of the birthday cake by Takeshi Matsui from Japan and Joanne Green from Wetland Care Australia. Pictured also is Heather Shearer, Wetland Care Australia, Tracey from Conservation Volunteers Australia, and the rest of this volunteer team.
