Directory of Wetland Management Training Opportunities

prepared by the Bureau of the Convention on Wetlands (Ramsar, Iran, 1971)

second edition, January 1999

Background

Article 4.5 of the Convention on Wetlands (Ramsar, Iran, 1971) requires that "the Contracting Parties shall promote the training of personnel competent in the fields of wetland research, management and wardening."

In its Strategic Plan 1997-2002, the Convention includes under General Objective 4, relating to capacity building, Operational Objective 4.2 which presents six priority actions intended to promote training. Action 4.2.2 under this Operational Objective calls for the identification of "current training opportunities in disciplines essential for the conservation and wise use of wetlands."

The Ramsar Convention Bureau responded to Action 4.2.2 by announcing on World Wetlands Day (2 February) 1998 that as part of its Wise Use Resource Centre a "Directory of Wetland Management Training Opportunities" would be developed.

This process has been under way throughout 1998 as a special project of the Bureau’s interns. They have developed and pilot-tested in different regions a questionnaire designed to provide detailed information about wetland management training opportunities which can be made available to interested people.

The current status of the Directory

In pilot-testing the questionnaire (as attached), the Bureau has identified approximately 65 training opportunities already, and the contact details of these are provided here. This information is also available on the Bureau’s Web site at http://ramsar.org, as is the questionnaire which can be downloaded by those people or organizations wishing to have their training course added to the Directory.

The Bureau hopes that the "Directory of Wetland Management Training Opportunities" will offer a service to those people seeking training in wetland management. It can also serve as a way for those people or organizations which offer relevant training opportunities to promote these programmes.

This first edition of the "Directory of Wetland Management Training Opportunities" should be considered as just the beginning of this project. The Bureau is keen to continue adding more information and updating that which it has. If you know of training opportunities that should be listed in the Directory please complete the questionnaire, or ask those responsible for the programme to do so. This project can only succeed and offer the service required if it has the broadest possible range of training programmes included.
