National Wetlands Conference announced for Russian Federation


NATIONAL WETLANDS CONFERENCE, FEB. 1999

"A Strategy for wetland conservation in the Russian Federation"

24-26 February 1999, Moscow, Russia

Organised by: State Committee of the Russian Federation on Environmental Protection and Wetlands International-Russia Programme

Objectives: The main objective of the conference is to bring together representatives from key government agencies, NGOs, scientific institutions and other stakeholders to review the current state of wetland conservation in Russia, and to develop A National Strategy and Action Plan for Wetland Conservation in the Russian Federation. This document will provide a basis for the development of national and regional initiatives for the conservation and sustainable management of wetlands, including the development of a GEF project for implementation of action related to the conservation of internationally important biodiversity. It will also provide a basis for enhanced national and international cooperation in the field of wetland management in the Russian Federation, including the identification of options and priorities for the cooperative management of transboundary wetlands.
