Crane Bank awards for wetland study in Uganda

Ramsar Crane Bank Award finalized

July 10th 2007 saw the Ramsar Crane Bank Award officially materialise at the Crane Bank chambers in Kampala, Uganda, marked by a ceremony of presentation of the Crane Bank support by the Managing Director of Crane Bank Ltd. The Government of Uganda and the Ramsar Secretariat were represented by the Honourable Jessica Eriyo (the Minister of State for Environment) and Mr. Paul Mafabi (the Uganda's Ramsar focal point and chair of the Ramsar Standing Committee).

The Ramsar Crane Bank Award is an outcome of the 9th meeting of the Conference of Contracting Parties (November 2005 in Kampala, Uganda) aimed at promoting the wise use concept for wetlands in the African region through a study tour formulated for young African wetland managers, thanks to the generous support from Crane Bank Limited. This should create a forum for learning from the successful experience of the Ugandan wetland management department in coordinating and managing wetland issues as well as create a medium for exchange of information (for more information see:
http://ramsar.org/wn/w.n.cranebank_award.htm).

The first two recipients of this award, Engr. Herizo Andrianandrasana Tiana and Mr. Osiman Mabhachi of Madagascar and Zimbabwe respectively, will subsequently be contacted by the Ugandan Ministry of Water and Environment to organize their trip.

The Ramsar Secretariat expresses its gratitude to Crane Bank Limited for going through with this award and to the Ugandan Ministry of Water and Environment for its mediating and organizational role.
