Ramsar signs memoranda in UNEP-GPA and International Ocean Institute Triple MoU/MoC signature in Beijing
At the 2nd Intergovernmental Review of the Global Programme of Action for the Protection of the Marine Environment from Land-Based Activities, meeting in Beijing China, the secretariat signed a Memoranda of Cooperation between the UNEP-GPA coordination office and the Ramsar Secretariat, designed to promote common objectives : in particular to use Ramsar frameworks to advances the objectives of the GPA. At the same time the GPA secretariat signed an MoU with the International Ocean Institute (IOI), Headquartered in Malta, followed by the Ramsar secretariat also signing an MoC with IOI.
The Secretary general commented Linking our activities with the GPOA is a clear example of developing synergies between instruments normally thought of as being in different clusters in this case biodiversity and Chemicals. Yet to be effective we both need to ensure we are following the same principles, and using the same implementation mechanisms this memorandum of cooperation starts top build that process. Both the Ramsar secretariat and the GPA secretariat also have clear message from parties that communicating the results of their deliberations via CEPA is essential to ensure adequate implementation. It is no coincidence then that we both signed new measures of cooperation with IOI, a leading global trainer in issues of coast and oceans issues. Without the spirit of cooperation and wise use of resources these memoranda signify we cannot serve our Parties in the best way implementing the Memoranda means win-win for all.
