This publication contains the Proceedings of the Second International Symposium on Limnology and Aquatic Birds held in Mérida (Yucatán, México) in November 1997 under the auspices of Universidad Autónoma de Yucatán (UADY) and CINVESTAV-IPN (Centro de Investigaciones y Estudios Avanzados del Instituto Politécnico Nacional-Unidad Mérida, Yucatán-México). The Symposia on Limnology and Aquatic Birds are endorsed every three years by the International Association of Theoretical and Applied Limnology –SIL- (htpp://www.limnology.org) through its Working Group on Limnology and Aquatic Birds.

The contents of this volume are grouped in three parts: Monitoring, Modeling and Management, which are major topics of interest for limnologists, ornithologists and nature managers. The subjects covered in this volume include:

1-The limnological basis of aquatic birds habitats: i) Characteristics of the aquatic environment in relation with abundance, distribution, behavior and ecophysiological characteristics of aquatic birds, ii) Methods and systems of monitoring aquatic birds and habitat features.

2-Modeling energy and links of aquatic ecosystems related to aquatic birds: i) Sources of food for aquatic birds and impact of birds on lower trophic levels, ii) Trophic relationships in aquatic ecosystems occupied by birds, iii) Role of birds in the nutrient dynamics of aquatic ecosystems.

3-Integrating management of aquatic ecosystems and bird populations conservation: i) Case studies and methodologies, ii) Local, regional and global perspectives.

The ultimate objective of this publication is to stimulate an integrated perspective for the study and management of aquatic ecosystems and the research across geographic and thematic frontiers.
