Australia; Ramsar Bureau 1997-2000

Born in a small town nestled beside a wetland in the semi-arid inland of Australia's southeast. Science degree and PhD in Zoology at the Australian National University in Canberra in 1984. Joined Australia's Federal Environment Agency and over the following 13 years worked on everything from koalas, bird banding (ringing), and community action programs. In 1989, given responsibility for Ramsar matters and for coordinating implementation of the Convention in Australia. Attended the 4th Ramsar COP in Montreux, 1990, and over the following years was a regular Oceania representative on the Standing Committee, also attending the 5th COP in Kushiro (1993) where Australia was accepted as the host for the following conference. Coordinated the host country organising team for the 6th Ramsar COP (Brisbane, 1996) while managing the Unit responsible for the National Wetlands Program and a community water education program called Waterwatch Australia.
