Degree in linguistics from Kazakh State University of World Languages, Almaty; apart from her native Russian and Kazakh she speaks English, French and some Italian. She worked as an assistant on the project "Water Resources of the Aral Sea" with the Kazakh State Academy of Architecture and Construction. In 2000, she obtained a Master's degree in environmental studies from the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow, UK (Graduate School of Environmental Studies), with a thesis on management of the Caspian Sea level fluctuation. Since October 2001 before joining Ramsar she worked as a researcher with an environmental management consultancy in Edinburgh, Scotland, particularly involved in the projects for oil and gas industry of her country.
