Los planes de estudio escolares son un cauce muy eficaz para facilitar informaciones y llevar a cabo actividades de sensibilización acerca de los valores y funciones de los humedales, pero distintos problemas hacen difícil a los docentes "transmitir" un mensaje eficaz sobre los humedales en las propias aulas. En muchos países, la instrucción medioambiental no forma parte de los planes de estudio oficiales; en otros, puede ser un elemento reconocido del plan de estudios nacional, pero cabe que ni las cuestiones relativas a los humedales en general, ni los principios de Ramsar de conservación y uso racional de los humedales hayan sido considerados temas a tratar concretamente en clase. En otros más, si bien los humedales figuran en el plan de estudios oficial, los profesores quizás no posean los conocimientos o la experiencia necesarios para tratar de ellos en sus actividades escolares.
Por último, aun cuando se cumplan todas estas condiciones, se exige de los profesores y elaboradores de planes de estudio en muchas partes del mundo que impartan y prevean una Educación para el Desarrollo Sostenible (EDS), paradigma pedagógico que fomenta un enfoque más global e interdisciplinario gracias al cual los alumnos adquieran conocimientos y competencias que los preparen para vivir en un mundo sostenible y que plantea toda una serie de nuevas tareas a las personas encargadas de redactar los planes de estudio. Naturalmente, para la familia de Ramsar en general, y para quienes se consagran a actividades de CECoP en torno a los humedales en particular, de lo que se trata es de velar por que -sea cual fuere el paradigma pedagógico vigente en un país- existan mecanismos para que las cuestiones referentes a los humedales se aborden adecuadamente en todos los niveles de la enseñanza escolar y los profesores tengan preparación suficiente para transmitir el mensaje.
Los lineamientos sobre CECoP exhortan a las Partes Contratantes a:
Revisar los planes de estudio oficiales a fin de que comporten información acerca de los servicios que los humedales prestan al ecosistema, promuevan el principio del uso racional y reconozcan la importancia de las actividades de CECoP para alcanzar el objetivo del uso racional (párr. 2.3.4 de los Lineamientos).
Sírvanse comunicarnos si en su país se ha incorporado la cuestión de los humedales al plan de estudios nacional. Su país podría ser un modelo de "práctica ejemplar" para otros.

En general, los materiales informativos más apropiados para el aula serán los que se ajusten a un grupo de edad determinadoy que transmitan un mensaje concreto (por ejemplo, se podría concebir materiales escolares para niños de 8 a 12 años de edad que vivan en torno al delta de Okavango, en los que se exponga cómo utilizan los habitantes de la zona el agua y cómo influye ello en el estado de salud de los humedales. Se trata, pues, de un mensaje concreto para el que se necesita documentación y materiales didácticos ajustados al tema). En la mayoría de las situaciones no se podrá transferir materiales ya preparados de un país a otro. Normalmente, habrá que hacer que la información corresponda al lugar en que se vaya a emplear. La finalidad de esta sección del minisitio del Programa de Promoción es proporcionar ejemplos de materiales existentes que informen, inspiren y faciliten contactos útiles a quienes tengan que preparar materiales y transmitir el mensaje de CECoP. Una vez más, su éxito dependerá de la buena disposición de los usuarios a compartir información. Para poner las cosas en marcha, hemos recogido algunos materiales didácticos interesantes, divididos en tres secciones. En la Sección 1 se documentan diversas ideas que están surgiendo para la educación para el desarrollo sostenible (EDS), con módulos didácticos para profesores, materiales didácticos para el aula y documentos de información sobre la EDS. En la Sección 2 se pormenorizan lecciones estructuradas sobre los humedales para profesores de distintos grupos de edad. En la Sección 3 se detallan materiales que se pueden emplear a modo de complemento de las actividades escolares normales: libros y folletos útiles sobre los humedales escritos para niños, juegos, gráficos murales, etc., además de otros materiales concebidos para ayudar a los profesores a llevar los humedales al aula y llevar a los niños a los humedales: juegos relativos al agua y los humedales, actividades lúdicas, gráficos murales, etc. Tengan en cuenta que estos apartados no son estancos y que los materiales de las distintas secciones se solapan frecuentemente.

| Australia's Environmental Education for a Sustainable Future: National Action Plan was published in 2000 and can be downloaded from Environment Australia's Web site as an Adobe PDF file (about 500KB). The plan is intended to provide leadership to the many different sectors involved in environmental education activities and promote better coordination of these activities. |

| The on-line Development Education Programme of the World Bank has designed tools and resources for secondary level teachers so that they can bring sustainable development issues at the national, regional and global level into the classroom. |

The UK Government set up a Sustainable Development Education Panel whose remit covered schools, further and higher education bodies, and education in work, recreation and the home. Look here for a Sustainable Development Action Plan for the education sector, launched in September 2003. The Action Plan aims to encourage wider participation in sustainable development in ALL education and skills sectors. This plan built upon the Panel's draft Strategy for Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) in England completed in February 2003. |

| Turning the Tide on Trash is a learning guide for teachers to increase the awareness of students of the impacts of marine debris as well as the prevention techniques. Although focused on marine debris (which ends up very often in coastal wetlands) the concepts are just as relevant for any aquatic debris. |
| Bog Ho! is an innovative Web-based learning project based in Canada that brings together primary schools from several countries to explore the importance and fragility of wetlands. The 2001 project brought together schools in three countries to conduct a comparative analysis of wetlands.
