How did we do in 2004?

Adaptation of Ramsar's WWD materials

For World Wetlands Day 2003 the Ramsar Secretariat launched a new initiative - making our WWD materials available on CD-ROM as Quark Xpress files – to encourage users with the appropriate software, or access to it, to print large numbers of copies for distribution, to translate the text into local languages, or to customise the publication, making it more relevant to local situations. Having met with some success last year (read more here) we again made the layout files available for WWD 2004. So how did our WWD contacts do in 2004? Despite the technical problems in using the Quark files experienced by a number of our contacts, we still have some pleasing results. Read on . . .

Use of the Quark Xpress files for WWD 2004

This beautiful poster produced by Thailand (our photo does not at all reflect its attractiveness!), shows charming images and text on 10 Thai Ramsar sites. Developed by the National Resources and Environmental Management Division of the Office of Environmental Policy and Planning (the Thai Ramsar Administrative Authority) and distributed widely to Ramsar sites, schools and NGOs, this is a fully Thai version of our poster. For the second year running, the Ramsar Administrative Authority in China has produced 10,000 copies of our WWD poster translated into Chinese. These have been distributed very widely to environmental government agencies, all Ramsar sites and nature reserves, universities, international NGOs, etc. Read their WWD report here.

An NGO in Morocco, the Société Protectrice des Animaux et de la Nature (SPANA) produced 100 copies of the WWD poster in Arabic and distributed them to the 10 SPANA centres in the country. Read their WWD report here

 

 

The Convention on Migratory Species produced an image of part of our poster to illustrate a news story emphasizing the importance of wetlands for the signatories to the CMS, and outlining CMS and AEWA cooperation with the Ramsar Convention. Their image showed Scarlet ibis and their news story focused on the Bald ibis, a critically endangered species that now has an International Species Action Plan to assist in its conservation thanks to the work of AEWA and CMS. An NGO in Bulgaria, Green Balkans, reproduced the WWD sticker in Bulgarian for broad distribution during their WWD activities. Read their report here.

 

 

The Evros Delta Visitor Centre in Greece produced the WWD poster in Greek as part of their WWD celebrations at the centre. Read more here

Following on from their creative use of our poster last year on a special WWD T-shirt, Trinidad & Tobago's Ramsar Administrative Authority have this year used part of the poster to produce a handy WWD bag! Read more here about their WWD activities here.
