Las campañas acerca de los humedales son poderosos instrumentos de sensibilización. En esta parte del minisitio consideraremos campañas de tres tipos: proyectos enraizados en una comunidad que fomenten la realización directa de actividades en humedales durante todo el año, campañas asociadas a un acto anual concreto del calendario de los humedales y campañas relativas a cuestiones o problemas determinados. Lo mismo si se trata de campañas sostenidas oque si duran un solo día al año, a menudo llevan a la gente a los humedales existentes donde viven o en sus proximidades y les muestran que su intervención puede ser muy importante.

Las campañas enraizadas en la comunidad pueden hacer que la gente que vive y trabaja en las proximidades de un humedal adquiere un sentimiento de pertenencia. Hacer que la gente participe en actividades prácticas en sus humedales es muy eficaz para conseguirlo. Ora vigilen la calidad del agua de las corrientes locales, ora limpien playas, ora se dediquen a recontar ranas, estas campañas demuestran a los habitantes del lugar que, individual y colectivamente, pueden hacer algo para supervisar y mejorar el estado de salud de sus humedales. En esta sección hay además algunos enlaces por la Red con campañas basadas en la comunidad que han dado buenos resultados en diversos países, pero, por favor, hágannos saber otros ejemplos de la parte del mundo en que estén ustedes.

World Wetlands Day, AustraliaUno de los mejores ejemplos de campaña basada en un acto es, claro está, el Día Mundial de los Humedales de Ramsar, pero hay muchos más. En esta sección se recogen, para empezar, unas cuantas campañas de esta clase, pero, por favor, háblennos de otras que hayan dado fruto de las que tengan conocimiento en la parte del mundo en que se encuentren.

Queremos aumentar esta sección del minisitio e incluir en él otros tipos de campañas. Por ejemplo, tenemos informaciones llegadas recientemente a la Oficina de una campaña centrada en un problema, llevada a cabo en Colombia para conservar los manatíes y su hábitat costero. Cuéntennos, pues, por favor, sus ideas acerca de campañas eficaces que podríamos incluir aquí.

En Internet se plantea siempre el problema de los sitios que vienen y van y de los que desaparecen para siempre jamás (¡Como el sitio de ramsar!). Aunque haremos todo lo posible por mantener al día las listas de enlaces, si encuentran uno que ya no está en servicio, comuníquennoslo, por favor (hails@ramsar.org).


Campañas basadas en la comunidad


Ramsar's key public celebration of wetlands each year, World Wetlands Day takes place on 2 February to mark the date of the signing in 1971 of the Convention on Wetlands, in the Iranian city of Ramsar.  From modest beginnings in 1997, the first WWD, when 27 countries reported at least one special activity, now more than 85 countries are usually involved and more than 250 separate activities take place in most years. “Observando la Arena” busca modificar los estilos de vida y los hábitos de niños, jóvenes y adultos a nivel comunitario y promover una mayor concienciación sobre la fragilidad del medio ambiente marino y costero así como la importancia de explotarlo con extrema prudencia. Este es un proceso educativo mediante el cual los estudiantes y los miembros de las comunidades trabajan y aprenden juntos a evaluar de manera crítica los problemas y conflictos relativos a sus playas y al mismo tiempo a desarrollar enfoques apropiados para encontrar una solución durable a esos problemas.
A landmark partnership between Conservation Volunteers Australia (CVA) and BHP Billiton, this campaign  is addressing the degraded state of 100 of Australia’s high priority wetlands. CVA will coordinate more than 14,000 volunteer days on Revive projects contributing $1 million worth of practical assistance to wetlands revitalisation. BHP Billiton is providing $1.5 million in funding and additional in-kind support to implement and evaluate the program over a three-year period from 2001 to 2003.
Stop Aquatic Hitchhikers is a US-based campaign along with an information-packed web site to empower recreational users of the aquatic environment to become part of the solution in stopping the transport and spread of "aquatic hitchhikers" -  animal and plant species that are accidentally introduced to marine and freshwater ecosystems and sometimes become invasive species.
A nationally organised community-based water monitoring project. Details available on how to start your own water watch programme

Groups and individuals all over the UK are given the opportunity to adopt their favourite stretch of coast and take part in beach clean-ups and surveys to monitor coastal pollution.

An all-volunteer effort dedicated to preserving and protecting Texas beaches. Since 1986 more than 239,000 volunteers have helped clean up a 200-mile stretch of Texas coastline
A cooperative school water monitoring programme in which students gather water quality data in their local area for use in classrooms and by industry, government agencies, private groups, or virtually anybody who is concerned about water quality in the Saginaw Bay Watershed and beyond.
A national watershed education programme designed to involve young people in local environmental service projects.
A network of citizens who are concerned about Missouri streams provides an opportunity for all to become involved in stream conservation. Stream Teams often adopt a backyard stream - open to any interested citizen, family or organization.
A partnership of public authorities, landowners, locally-based companies and local communities, Turning the Tide is a coordinated programme of inter-linked projects to improve the 18-kilometre Durham coastline.
A project run by a whole range of conservation organizations, wildlife magazines, BBC wildlife shows, that involves children surveying wildlife throughout the country. The first survey of 2001 is a frog survey .
Frogwatch-Ontario is an amphibian monitoring programme for community members of all ages.Volunteers record information about the location and abundance of frog species by listening for their calls in the spring and early summer.
A campaign with a difference! Ducks Unlimited (Canada) invites corporate and private sponsors to adopt-a-class (and its teacher!). Once adopted, the class is supplied with materials so that these young students and their teachers can be introduced to the fascinating world of wetlands.

Celebrated on 29th June each year, Danube Day is an opportunity for the 81 million people in the 13 main Danube countries to celebrate a cleaner, safer river after 11 years of international collaboration to manage the river. Activities on this day also encourage peoples' involvement in deciding how the river should be used in the future.
"World Rivers Day" is celebrated on September 25th each year. BC Rivers Day in western Canada is one of the biggest events of its kind in the world, attracting up to 75,000 people annually. It is used to highlight the many values of our waterways, to increase public awareness, and hopefully, to encourage the improved stewardship of rivers around the world.
El Día Mundial del Medio Ambiente, establecido en 1972, es organizado por el PNUMA con un tema ambiental distinto cada año. El PNUMA produce una carpeta informativa que consta de un resumen de hechos esenciales, un cartel, un comunicado de prensa y otra documentación. El enlace de la izquierda lleva al Día Mundial del Medio Ambiente 2004; vayan allá si desean conocer los temas de otros años.
El Centro Ramsar del Japón está utilizando el Día Mundial de los Humedales para lanzar una campaña de sensibilización sobre los humedales en la región asiática. En 2004, tendrá lugar del 2 al 8 de febrero. Más informaciones sobre sus planes en su sitio Web (en inglés y japonés).
The official UK site for the UN International Year of Freshwater (IYFW) 2003 includes aNational collection of Freshwater Sites, painting and literary competitions, a Freshwater survey, and the chance to vote for your favourite freshwater site.  In keeping with the aims of the IYFW the UK campaign aims to increase awareness of freshwate, its management and protection, and the importance of improving access to safe water for humans and wildlife.
A partnership between the Caribbean Conservation Corporation and the Volvo Ocean Adventure increases awareness about sea turtles and the marine environment during the round the world Volvo Ocean Race. Teachers are provided with a free educator’s guide to help them develop an internet-based project  satellire-tracking three green sea turtles satellitefrom Tortuguero, Costa Rica, that were released at the start of the Volvo Ocean Race in September, 2001.

Events organized each year allow divers and other marine/coastal enthusiasts to celebrate Earth Day (22 April) while raising awareness and taking action to protect their coral reefs, oceans, lakes, rivers, and beaches. Last year divers (and non-divers) in over 30 countries took part.
As part of the Annual International Clean-up Day,  hundreds of thousands of water lovers of all ages come together in September each year in support of the aquatic environment. They collect enormous amounts of debris from beaches, rivers, lakes, waterways and oceans. In  2002, almost a million divers and beach lovers in 100 countries took part.
Saltwatch is an environmental programme for Saltwatch Week in May each year to help communities and schools better understand the salinity problem in Victoria, Australia. This programme has been running successfully for over a decade.

Campañas basadas en un problema


The Blue Flag is an exclusive eco-label awarded to almost 2900 beaches and marinas in 24 countries across Europe and South Africa in 2003. Owned and run by the independent non-profit organisation, Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE), the Blue Flag is a symbol of high environmental standards as well as good sanitary and safety facilities at the beach/marina. The Campaign includes environmental education and information for the public, decision makers and tourism operators.
The "Pennies for the Planet" campaign, now in its fourth year of operation, encourages students (and their teachers of course) to get involved in taking action to conserve threatened habitats, each year focusing on different habitats. The Web site gives solid background information on the selected areas and includes on-line activities as well as activities that can be downloaded to help teachers get their students involved. Free posters are available too each year.
A   campaign from WWF's China Programme, calling for university students across China to submit proposals for raising awareness amongst government officials, farmers and other stakeholders living in and around China's 21 Ramsar sites on the importance and benefits of conserving China's rivers and lakes.

Protege Al Manatí

A campaign to conserve manatees aimed at fishermen, schoolchildren and the public by a Colombian NGO, CORMAGDALENA.
WWF's global Living Waters Campaign has two main approaches to keep water flowing fresh: Managing rivers better by recognising the vital interdependence of land, water and ecosystems and Increasing wetland conservation areas and improving their management and uses. The campaign is aimed at all sectors of society - local people, NGOs and governments.
