Wetlands International names new International Science Coordinator

Wetlands International appoints new International Science Coordinator

Wetlands International is very pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Douglas Taylor as International Science Coordinator. He will succeed Dr. Nick Davidson, who has accepted the position of Deputy Secretary General at the Ramsar Convention. Dr. Taylor will formally join the International Coordination Unit (in Wageningen, The Netherlands) in April 2000.

Dr. Taylor has most recently been employed by Somerset County Council in the United Kingdom, with responsibility for wetlands management. Prior to this he worked with IUCN as Technical Advisor to the Government of Uganda, where he was involved in the formulation of the national wetlands policy.

Dr. Taylor is also involved in a number of other wetlands projects, including a number of steering groups, as a contributor to The Global Wetlands Resource Inventory for the Ramsar Convention, membership on the IUCN Commission on Ecosystem Management, and he has led expert missions in Kenya, Uganda, Belarus, South Africa, and Botswana. In addition, he has worked with several volunteer and expert groups (for example on the Kenya Bird Atlas) during wetland bird counts.

Dr. Taylor's original discipline is biology with a B.Sc. in Biology and D. Phil of Plant Physiology/Biochemistry from the University of Sussex. He spent a number of years as a lecturer at the University of Nairobi in Kenya as well as a stint at the University of Sussex in the UK.

The staff of the International Coordination Unit welcomes Dr. Doug Taylor to Wetlands International and looks forward to working with him.
