Abundance of Monkeys (23/06/05)

Here's a message from Malaysia originally sent to the Ramsar Wetlands Forum. They are having problems with a species of monkey at a Ramsar site - please reply directly to Mr Singh if you have any advice to offer.

Dear all

We have an over abundance of the long-tailed macaque (macaca facicularis) in our Ramsar site in Tanjung Piai. Getting more mischievous by the day and if uncontrolled it may affect my bird population. Their diet consist mainly of fruits, eggs, shoots, insects and crabs.

When in groups they can be a menace to visitors as they make a dash for any food in sight where they assume that any bags contain food. They love to scavenge at our dustbins

If any of you have innovative approaches to this problem it is appreciated.
