Publications from CEC (11/03/05)

As many of you know, here at the Secretariat we work quite closely with IUCN's Commission on Education and Communication (CEC). The three texts described below have been produced by CEC largely from workshops held over the last two years.

1. "Engaging people in sustainability" by Daniella Tilbury and David Wortman, published in 2004, outlines the theory and practice of Education for Sustainable Development in terms of imagining a better future, critical thinking and reflection, participation in decision making , partnerships and systemic thinking. This has been based on lessons from a CEC organized workshop, with Japan Environmental Education Forum and Greencom support at the WSSD workshop in August 2002.

2. Another publication in 2004, from a CEC workshop held at the World Parks Congress in Durban in 2003, is "Communicating Protected Areas", edited by Denise Hamu, Elisabeth Auchincloss, and Wendy Goldstein. The text is based on a collection of 15 cases studies from government agencies and NGOs with valuable sections on lessons learned and key recommendations as well as some papers emphasizing the need to professionalize communication for protected areas. It's organized under five main headings: (i) Strategic communication to build support for protected areas: principles, lessons and recommendations; (ii) Governmental agencies using communication to build support for protected areas; (iii) NGOs using communication to build support for protected areas; and (iv) Looking to the future: professionalizing protected area communication.

3. Achieving Environmental Objectives - The role and value of communication, education, participation, awareness (CEPA) in Conventions and Agreements in Europe by Gillian Marin-Mehers, Susana Calvo, Elisabeth Auchincloss, and Wendy Goldstein was drawn largely from a CEC (Europe) CEPA workshop in held in 2004. This publication explains the various environmental Conventions and Agreements, global and European and the role of communication, education, participation and awareness CEPA in those agreements. Cases studies are examined to draw out the tipping point during which change occurred as a result of the education and communication program. Overall lessons drawn out in the workshop are described in a concluding chapter.
