The Decade of ESD - international conference in India and more (08/10/04)
Hello everyone:
As many
of you already know, 2005 sees the start of the United Nations Decade of
Education for Sustainable Development. UNESCO is the lead agency on this
and they have already begun animating a special area of their Web site for
ESD - look here: http://portal.unesco.org/education/en/ev.php-URL_ID=27234&URL_DO=DO_TOPI
C&URL_SECTION=201.html (certainly NOT the most user-friendly URL!).
Ramsar's CEPA Resolution, adopted in 2002, recognised the importance of the ESD concept when it encouraged "the Contracting Parties to adopt the concept Ramsar CEPA for Sustainable Development to effectively address the ecological, social, cultural and economic values of wetlands through this programme". In the CEPA web pages I have been building up a modest number of on-line resources on ESD which you can see here http://www.ramsar.org/outreach_teachingmaterials.htm (see Section 1). If you know of other resources that are available please let me know. I hope we will be able to develop this concept and its relevance for wetland CEPA in the months to come.
Still on the ESD theme, here's notice of an upcoming international conference to launch the decade.
'Education for a Sustainable Future' (ESF) is to be held during 18-20 Jan., 2005 at CEE, Ahmedabad, India. This conference is being planned by the Centre for Environment Education, India, in partnership with Ministry of Environment and Forests, and Ministry of Human Resources Development (Education), Govt. of India and UNESCO and UNEP.
Organised as a series of thematic workshops, the conference aims to:
** Share the understanding, current status and needs of ESD
** Showcase best practices for ESD from different parts of the world.
** Strengthen networking and active participation of all stakeholders for ESD for the next decade.
** Develop a Strategy and a blueprint of action for the Decade, including India's strategy and its role in the Decade.
** Work towards developing guiding principles, roadmaps and priorities for Education for Sustainable Development in the Decade.
Please
visit weblink www.ceeindia.org/esf for more details on the workshops as
well as registration, conference schedule, a call for conference papers
and more.
CEE is a national institution engaged in developing programmes and materials
to increase awareness about the environment (please see www.ceeindia.org).
CEE completes 20 years this year. ESF is seen as an occasion to mark this
and to coincide with the beginning of the UN Decade of Education for Sustainable
Development (UNDESD -2005-2014).
Best wishes
for a restful weekend, Sandra Hails, Ramsar Secretariat
