A new publication on economic valuation (16/11/06)

A new publication for your economic valuation library isThe Economic Value of Wild Resources in Senegal: A preliminary evaluation of non-timber forest products, game and freshwater fisheries, published by IUCN in 2006. Based on new data gathered from producers, traders, and consumers of wild plant and animal products, preliminary results indicate that non-timber wild plants, game, and freshwater fish are mainly produced for sale, with a small proportion destined for home consumption. While the economic importance of wild resources varies significantly in the different regions of the country surveyed, wild plants and game appeared to be most important to the poorest households, contributing up to 50% of their annual cash income. The annual value added from all non-timber wild plants, animals and freshwater fisheries in Senegal which are currently excluded from the national accounts, is conservatively estimated by this study at no less than US$ 19 to 35 million.

This publication includes an overview of the methods used as well as details on the research findings for the three main groups of resources investigated, non-timber forest products, game, bushmeat and other animal products, and freshwater fisheries. The annexes include sample survey forms used in the study as well as tables of the basic valuation data and a full bibliography.
