Ramsar stamps to celebrate a new Ramsar Site on Guernsey Island (01/09/06)
Good afternoon everyone:
There are many ways to make people aware of Ramsar and Ramsar Sites one innovative way is the production of postage stamps. In 2004 I reported on the production of stamps depicting a Ramsar Site by Jamaica (read the story here http://www.ramsar.org/outreach_news_jamaica.htm).
Today I am happy to report on a similar exercise in Guernsey in the Channel Islands (a crown dependency of the United Kingdom). The stamps were issued by the Guernsey Philatelic Bureau in celebration of the designation of Lihou Island and L'Erée Headland as a Ramsar Site on the 1st of March 2006. The beautiful first day cover includes an informative leaflet on the site with some detailed information on the subject of each of the six stamps and information on the Ramsar Convention and what site designation means.
Also available is a presentation pack of the stamps and six wonderfully illustrated and informative leaflets, one for each stamp, from the designer Wendy Bramall. Dwight Peck at the Secretariat has scanned the material and made it available on our web site here http://www.ramsar.org/wn/w.n.guernsey-stamps.htm.
Best wishes for a restful weekend, Sandra Hails, Ramsar Secretariat
