Supergoose - a great initiative on bird migration from WWT (01/06/06)

Below is a message from the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust (WWT, the organisation that is home to WLI, Wetland Link International). Unfortunately I’m a day late sending this out so you will not be able to watch the television programme referred to on the UK’s BBC television – but then many of you would not have been able to anyway! Despite this, I recommend you take the time to look at their web link below. This is a great initiative with web pages that include a well-written fact file, information on the migration route, a competition, satellite tracking of the geese, not to mention a practical idea for creating your own Supergoose cap, and much more, providing a ready-to-use package of resources for schools and youth groups.

Sarah Gill from WWT writes: “A joint WWT and BBC project will follow the migration of 10 Light-bellied Brent Geese on their 8,000km round trip from the Castle Espie site at Strangford Lough in Northern Ireland to their Canadian breeding grounds and back again. Launched tonight [Ed: 31st May] on Springwatch the project will also be followed by CBBC who will be running a competition for viewers to choose the names of 3 of the Supergeese.

The Supergoose story can be followed online from now until November when the Brent Geese return to Castle Espie for the winter. The return of the geese will be featured on BBC2 Autumnwatch in October which will be filmed live from Martin Mere for 3 weeks.

For those of you able to watch the UK’s BBC television, WWT’s Kendrew Colhoun will be speaking live from the Springwatch barn on the CBBC’s Really Wild Show on Friday (2 June) at 2pm.
