Information needed on mangrove parks (28/04/06)

Mumbai (Bombay) is one of the most populated environmental paradise in the world. The city is a paradise for the 103 sq. km wildlife park (Sanjay Gandhi National Park) and 45 sq. kms of mangrove forests. Both these ecosystems are under constant demographic stress and needs protection.

The Soonabai Pirojsha Godrej Foundation is one of the organisation working for the past 20 years to save mangroves in Mumbai. The foundation owns a large chunk of mangrove forest which has been protected since 1985. The activities of the SPGF are - onservation, research and education.

We are working on a Mangrove Park proposal that would educate masses and bring mangrove areas in the focus. The proposed park would come in Thane Creek area which is a proposed Ramsar site. We need information similar parks. The information we are looking for is area, infrastructure, costs involved, available expertise, no. of visitors and economics as we would like to aim at making a self sustaining park.
