The Ramsar Convention's Small Grants Fund
The Ramsar Convention established the Small Grants Fund (SGF) in 1990 as a mechanism to assist developing countries and countries with economies in transition to implement the Convention and to support the conservation and wise use of wetland resources, with a strong human and social dimension. From 1991 to 2012, the Fund has provided a total of 8.1 million Swiss Francs to 245 projects from 110 countries, providing up to 40,000 Swiss Francs per project.
Donors - Offering your financial support
The Ramsar Small Grants Fund relies entirely upon voluntary contributions from governments and individuals for its operations. Would you like to give these projects a chance to be implemented? Have a look in our yearly SGF portfolio! Support for projects is accepted year-round. Donors can support projects in whole, if they wish to pick a country project or give any amount of money to the SGF Fund in general. This amount will be attributed to the best project.

In need for financial support for your project - How to apply?
Projects may be proposed and implemented by any agency, NGO, or individual, but proposals MUST be endorsed and monitored by the Administrative Authority (the Ramsar implementing agency) in the Party's government. Each year a rigorous evaluation procedure is carried out by the Ramsar Secretariat to assess the project proposals according to the strength of the project design, their relevance to the Convention’s objectives, and the capacity of the proponents to complete the project successfully.
Please note that there is no call for proposals planned for 2013 and beginning of 2014.
Achievements, Results, Impacts
Allocations Reports and Ramsar Secretariat’s visits to SGF projects will offer an overview on our last achieved projects. Awareness raising, wetland management planning and implementation, education and training are some of the outcomes of Ramsar SGF projects.
In 2010, total contributions received were CHF 122,473, allowing funding 3 of the 40 project proposals favourably evaluated by the Ramsar Secretariat:
- CAMBODIA - Strengthening and expanding the Ramsar Sites network
- GUINEA BISSAU - Wise use of the Ramsar Site “Lagoa de Cufada”, toward better management through poverty reduction and awareness.
- NEPAL - Community-based wetland conservation in Mai Pokhari
