Anlo-Keta lagoon complex.14/08/92; Volta; 127,780 ha; 05º55’N 000º50’E. Part of the Volta estuary comprising several small islands and a complex of lagoons with varying salinity. The dominant vegetation in the area is coastal savanna, and the area is abundant with bird, fish and butterfly species and also the endangered waterbuck. The site is used for its rich fish resurces, salt mining, charcoal production, and hunting. Ramsar site no. 567. Most recent RIS information: 1998.

Densu delta. 14/08/92; Greater Accra; 4,620 ha; 05º33’N 000º18’W. The site is a delta estuary containing sand dunes, scattered mangrove stands, lagoons, saltpans, marsh and scrub. The mangroves make up the main vegetation in the salt marsh, with several fish species in the area, too. Local people depend upon the lagoon for fish resources, fuelwood, and salt production. There is currently very little tourism in the area, however, and a birdwatching point has been installed for visitors. Ramsar site no. 564. Most recent RIS information: 1998.

Muni Lagoon.14/08/92; Central; 8,670 ha; 05º22’N 000º40’W. A coastal lagoon with sand dunes, an open saline lagoon, areas of marshland subject to tidal and seasonal inundation, degraded forest and scrubland. Eastern fringes of the lagoon are marginally covered with mangroves, while the area has several small and mammal species, and the site supports an estimated population of 23,000 waterbirds. Fishing is one of the main activities in the lagoon area, as well as collection of fuelwood, while part of the grassland is used for cattle and sheep grazing. An educational center is under construction for recreational and touristic purposes. Ramsar site no. 563. Most recent RIS information: 1998.

Owabi.22/02/88; Ashanti; 7,260 ha; 06º44’N 001º41’W. A reservoir resulting from the 1940 damming of the Owabi River. Consists of associated reedbeds and marshland, surrounded by secondary woodland and plantation areas. The site is important to resident waterbirds including Ardeidae (herons, bitterns, etc.), and to various species of wintering and staging birds during migration. A water treatment plant is located on the site. The site is used for educational and recreational purposes. Ramsar site no. 393. Most recent RIS information: ?.

Sakumo Lagoon. 14/08/92; Greater Accra; 1,340 ha; 05º40’N 000º10’W. The site is broadly comprised of a coastal brackish-saline lagoon whose main habitats are open lagoon, surrounding floodplains, freshwater marsh, and coastal savanna grassland, with a narrow connection to the sea. The site receives rare and endangered migratory species and several fish species. Fishing is the main livelihood of the communities around the lagoon, but some industrial activities occur near the site. Ramsar site no. 565. Most recent RIS information: 1998.

Songor Lagoon. 14/08/92; Greater Accra; 28,740 ha; 05º45’N 000º30’E. The site is a closed lagoon with inundated mudflats that form the main habitat within the site. There is quite some notable fauna in the area that includes leatherback, olive ridley and green turtles; some migratory birds, including avocet, terns and green shanks, are also present. Local communities depend on the site for fish resources, farming and salt mining. Ramsar site no. 566. Most recent RIS information: 1998.
