Wetlands of International Importance: Zambia, Kafue Flats

Kafue Flats: Lochinvar & Blue Lagoon. 28/08/91; Southern Province; 83,000 ha; 16º00’S 027º15’E. National Parks. Two national parks consisting of marsh and swamp floodplains, termitaria (grassland), woodland zones, and geothermal areas, separated and within the vast Kafue Flats game area. The site is a conservation area for indigenous and endemic flora and fauna, including globally threatened cranes. The wetlands provide water for hydroelectric power generation, irrigation, fisheries, industrial and urban use. Human benefits include a fishery, wildlife production, and livestock grazing. Ramsar site no. 530.
