The Annotated Ramsar List of Wetlands of International Importance

The Convention on Wetlands came into force for Grenada on 22 September 2012. Grenada presently has 1 site designated as a Wetland of International Importance, with a surface area of [518] hectares.

Levera Wetland.22/05/12; Saint Patrick parish; 518 ha; 12°13'30"N 061°36'40"W. [Preliminary description: A varied area of valuable tropical marine ecosystems on the northeast of the island, including seagrass beds, coral reefs, and a freshwater pond in the in-filled caldera of an ancient volcano, surrounded by red (Rhizophra mangle), white (Laguncularia racemosa), black (Avicennia germinans), and buttonwood (Conocarpus erectus) mangroves. The site extends from the pond and surroundings past the Levera beach out to and including Sugar Loaf Island. It is important for wildlife and turtle nesting and is said to be sustainably used for social, economic and cultural activities by adjacent communities. Such uses include fishing, hunting, harvesting of mangrove wood for charcoal production and of plants for livestock fodder, and recreational pursuits such as picnicking, swimming, fishing, camping, sports, and turtle watching.] Ramsar Site no. 2034.
