The Annotated Ramsar List of Wetlands of International Importance
LIECHTENSTEIN

The Convention on Wetlands came into force for Liechtenstein on 6 December 1991. Liechtenstein presently has 1 site designated as a Wetland of International Importance, with a surface area of 101 hectares.

Ruggeller Riet.06/08/91; 101 ha; 47º15’N 009º33’E. Nature Reserve. A complex of lowland wet meadows underlain by up to nine meters of peat. Dominant vegetation includes Molinia, Schoenus and Cladium, with some areas of scrub. The site supports an exceptional floral diversity for its size, 450 species of ferns, flowering plants and numerous species of particularly rare plants. There are significant stands of Allium, Dryopteris cristata, gladiolus, and iris. Other important elements of the area’s biodiversity include fungi, mosses, invertebrates and birds. The hay meadows are cut on a rotational basis. Ramsar site no. 529. Most recent RIS information: 1998.
