Ramsar staff and many other guests gathered on the IUCN terrace yesterday in Gland, Switzerland, to thank Anada Tiéga for his six years as Secretary General to the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands.

Mr Tiéga first joined the Ramsar Convention Secretariat in 1998 as Regional Coordinator for Africa and in six years he built many productive and lasting relationships with the authorities and organizations in the Africa region, and gained experience of the workings of the Convention at the global level. After a five year period back in Africa he returned to Ramsar in 2007 as Secretary General, bringing with him a wealth of knowledge, understanding and a commitment to bringing greater recognition of the importance of wetlands and the value of the Ramsar Convention.

Colleagues and friends from many organizations braved the summer heat yesterday evening to enjoy the friendly farewell messages lauding the many achievements of Mr Tiéga during his six-year tenure at the helm of the Ramsar Convention. Mr Lasse Gustavsson, Executive Director, Conservation Programme, WWF, and Ms Julia Marton-Lefèvre, Director General of IUCN, representing two of Ramsar’s International Organization Partners, spoke highly of Mr Tiéga’s intense dedication to wetland conservation and his leadership and considerable success in gaining better recognition of the central role of wetlands in sustaining the health of the world’s ecosystems.

Mr Tiéga’s wife, daughter and young grandson were present, the latter adding a very warm touch to the celebration, clearly sharing with the rest of the well-wishers his admiration for the Secretary General!

In a moving speech, Mr Tiéga addressed his colleagues and friends with the support of his grandson

Ramsar’s Deputy Secretary General Nick Davidson spoke of his long working relationship with Mr Tiéga, amusingly noting that he had first been ‘Anada’s boss’ and then these roles were reversed when the latter returned as the Secretary General. Mr Tiéga took the floor to thank all guests for this memorable moment and spoke of his honour in leading the Convention but also of his commitment to carry on in retirement working for wetlands.

The whole Ramsar Secretariat will carry Ramsar’s mission forward under the leadership of Dr Christopher Briggs who will succeed Mr Anada Tiéga as the new Secretary General in the middle of August. The whole team wishes Mr Tiéga a joyful retirement and thanks him for his many years of dedication to wetland conservation.
