In order to get more professional training and contribute to the sustainable management of natural resources at global level, the Senghor University in Egypt, through its Department of Environment, is developing partnerships with international organisations and Multinational Environmental Agreements. The Ramsar Convention has been providing help with several training modules on wetlands and protected areas management over several years, coaching students on the preparation of their theses, and also evaluating the University’s research and training curricula. After several years of collaboration, the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands and the Senghor University signed a Memorandum of Cooperation (MOC) on 13 May 2013.

In addition to the signing of the MOC, the Secretary General of the Ramsar Convention, Mr Anada Tiega, attended the graduation ceremony of the students on 14 May 2013 as the mentor of the 26th batch of students of the Masters programme in Protected Areas Management. Twelve of these students were technically supervised by Ramsar’s Senior Regional Advisor for Africa, Dr Paul Ouédraogo.
The student representative, Mr Eric Bayala, stated that “Mr Anada Tiega was chosen as a mentor for this Masters programme as a result of his wide experience in wetlands and protected area management, his hard fight for biodiversity conservation and his tenacity in establishing a link between conservation and sustainable development”. He added that the multiple responsibilities handled by Mr Tiega in the field of conservation clearly indicate that his mentorship will enhance the image of the Masters Degree programme in Protected Areas Management of Senghor University.
