Dear Everyone:

I have received an interesting email from Bob Winters in Australia. He's looking for some bird images to illustrate a wetland/Ramsar education project. Of particular interest is that most of the materials being prepared are generic enough to be used in any country where marine wetlands occur - and that these materials will eventually be available online. I will keep in touch with Bob and make sure I alert the list when these are available.

Please respond directly to Bob if you are able to assist with photos.

Best wishes, Sandra Hails, Ramsar Secretariat

From Bob…….

I am needing some shorebird images to go on the web: 1. shorebirds breeding in northern Asia; 2. shorebirds feeding in the Yellow Sea or images with an Asian context of the Yellow Sea (low tide)

Background to the project

I have completed the first draft of a wetland/Ramsar education project for the Victorian (Australia) Department of Sustainability and Department of Primary Industry. The web materials will include a student research centre, extensive curriculum materials, some electronic field guides and a powerpoint. It is aimed at upper primary school and lower secondary schools. The focus will be on marine wetlands including mudflats, seagrass meadows, mangroves (only one species in Victoria) and saltmarshes(very diverse ecosystems) that occur in Victoria. There will also be an Aboriginal perspective. Students are asked to investigate and find solutions to the conservation of marine wetlands and migratory shorebirds. Students are asked to examine the consequences of climate change and the issues involved with rising sea levels. The bulk of the curriculum materials could be used in any country with marine wetlands.
The curriculum materials are based on the latest learning pedagogies so there are some very exciting learning experiences for students.

It will be quite a few months before the material will be online.

Regards Bob
