Wet & Wild in Australia

Greetings everyone:Here's some useful information on a successful schools programme, and in particular the Wet & Wild competition, run by the Wetlands Environmental Education Centre located at the Hunter Wetlands Centre in Australia.
The school education programme organizes day visits from students at all levels of schooling from primary through secondary and has activities that are clearly linked to the state curriculum. But my story today is about their online competition Wet & Wild. Targetted at 7-10 year olds, the competition runs once in each term and each competition has a major theme and runs for three weeks. Students receive a set of jumbled, simple clues each week of the competition. Their challenge? To use the internet as well as resources within their school libraries to sort the clues and use them to identify four mystery wetland plants, insects or animals.
The competition encourages both research and teamwork and has been met with great enthusiasm by the many participating schools despite the fact that there are no big prizes for the winners - the three winning teams are announced on the web site and all participating teams receive a Wet & Wild certificate. When I spoke to Carloyn Gillard who manages the competition she said "Wet and wild has been surprisingly successful. Teachers have confirmed the value of a learning program, which integrates technology, research and environmental education and students say it is great fun."
You can find out more about the Wetlands Environmental Education Centre at www.wetlands.eec.education.nsw.gov.au and the link to Wet & Wild is on the left hand menu.
With best wishes, Sandra Hails, Ramsar Secretariat
