Raising awareness about Ramsar Sites and other wetlands

Greetings Everyone:
We often receive information from our Contracting Parties about their communication activities to raise awareness about wetlands in general and Ramsar Sites in particular. Having just received two rather similar leaflets from our CEPA Focal Point in Turkey, Serhan Çagirankaya, and our National Focal Point in Argentina, Sara Beatriz Sverlij, I thought it would be useful to share these examples with list members.
Raising awareness about Turkish Ramsar Sites. The General Directorate of Nature Conservation and National Parks within the Ministry of Environment and Forestry has published a full-colour brochure showing Turkey’s 12 Ramsar Sites which cover over 179,000 hectares in total. The fold-out, eight-page leaflet includes beautiful photographs of each site as well as key information concerning coordinates, elevation, area, and designation date. Text on each site highlights the wetland type as well as the important species to be found there and also includes other significant facts, such as ongoing implementation of a management plan, interesting archaeological remains, artisanal use, and key threats. A map of Turkey identifies the location of each site. Here is a link to a low-res PDF of the leaflet http://www.ramsar.org/wn/w.n.turkey_ramsar_leaflet.pdf. For further information, contact Serhan at c.serhan@gmail.com.
Raising awareness about Ramsar Sites and about wetlands in general in Argentina. This well-illustrated leaflet has been produced by the Environment and Sustainable Development Secretariat’s Working Group on Aquatic Resources. A map identifies the location of Argentina’s 18 Ramsar Sites and brief text panels cover broad issues about wetlands for readers, such as What are wetlands? Why conserve wetlands? Sustainable use of wetlands, as well as a useful brief section on the Ramsar Convention. The leaflet can be downloaded here http://www.ambiente.gov.ar/archivos/web/GTRA/file/tript_humedales_curvas.pdf. For further information, contact Sara at ssverlij@ambiente.gob.ar.
With best wishes, Sandra Hails, Ramsar Secretariat
