CEPA toolkit (11/05/07)

Good morning everyone:

A CEPA toolkit has been developed by the IUCN Commission on Education and Communication. It was commissioned by the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), and designed specifically for use by professionals charged with implementing National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plans (NBSAP Coordinators).

Our Ramsar CEPA Focal Points, many of them members of this list, as well as many other CEPA professionals, were invited in the very early stages of the development of this toolkit to take part in an online survey on their CEPA needs. This resulting toolkit offers a wide range of resources for CEPA professionals to update their knowledge and skills. It includes fact sheets, checklists and practical examples from all over the world. Here’s the list of contents:

Preface and acknowledgements
Section 1: Why do we need CEPA and how to start?
Section 2: How to network and raise awareness?
Section 3: How to engage stakeholders and mainstream biodiversity?
Section 4: How to plan communication strategically?
Glossary CEPA
Glossary ESD
Glossary Biodiversity
More tools: videos, power point presentations, brochures
Links: a selection of useful websites
Documents for further reading: manuals and background documents

You can use this toolkit online, download each part of it in PDF, download the entire kit in PDF, or even download the entire web site for use on a CD-ROM, and you can do all of that here http://www.cepatoolkit.org/.

Since this was commissioned by the CBD, the toolkit's primary target group is the Coordinators of NBSAPs, and the structure of the kit reflects the kinds of questions they may have in this role. It would be interesting to know how many of our CEPA Focal Points find this toolkit useful in terms of implementing the Ramsar CEPA Programme and it would also be interesting to know how useful other list members find the toolkit in their CEPA work.

With best wishes, Sandra Hails, Ramsar Secretariat
