World Wetlands Day 2007 - first announcement (22/06/06)

Good afternoon CEPA list members:

It’s 225 days until World Wetlands Day 2007. Seems like a long time – but not if you have to look for funding or shake others into action to begin your WWD planning! The theme for 2007 will be on wetlands and fisheries – a topic that has relevance for everyone from consumer to fisher to decision-maker to conservationist. It’s a timely theme for the Ramsar Convention since we adopted a fisheries resolution at COP9 last year .

We now have an index page for WWD 2007 – http://www.ramsar.org/wwd/7/wwd2007_index.htm – that gives an introduction to the theme, information on the materials we are planning, and a brief paper with some facts and figures on fisheries and wetlands to set the scene.

What we don’t have right now is a slogan but we’re working on it! With fifteen nationalities covering all Ramsar regions in the Secretariat, our brainstorming to identify a slogan has not been without a few arguments here and there, and thankfully, much humour, but we have narrowed our choice down to three. The final choice will be coming – soon.

Meanwhile have a look at our WWD page for 2007, tell your friends and colleagues, and please consider organizing a WWD event to celebrate wetlands in your country in February 2007.
