Funding for sustainable tourism (18/08/05)

Good morning everyone:

1. Here's an interesting funding possibility for those of you interested in the development of sustainable tourism.

Tourism Cares for Tomorrow is a non-profit that benefits society by preserving, conserving and promoting the responsible use of our world's natural, cultural and historic treasures and supporting education and research to help secure the positive future of travel and tourism worldwide. It was created by the merging of the National Tour Association's National Tourism Foundation and the United States Tour Operators Association's Travelers Conservation Foundation. As part of its mission, Tourism Cares for Tomorrow distributes charitable grants to worthy nonprofit organizations worldwide for conservation or preservation. Grants typically range from $5,000 to $20,000 and will be considered for either capital improvements or appropriate programs. Deadlines are September 1 and December 1.

More information from their Web site here http://www.tourismcaresfortomorrow.org/tourismcares/ (please contact them directly for any further information).

2. Since we are on the subject of tourism, here's another publication for your ever-expanding tourism library!

The international journal for protected area managers, 'Parks' is published three times a year by the World Commission on Protected Areas (WCPA) of IUCN. In 2002 they produced a special issue on Tourism and Protected Areas. It includes an editorial as well as six papers on important aspects of managing park tourism:

a. Editorial, by PAUL F.J. EAGLES
b. Tourism-use measurement and reporting in parks and protected areas, by PAUL F.J. EAGLES c. Environmentally-friendly design and planning of sustainable tourism facilities in protected areas by HÉCTOR CEBALLOS-LASCURÁIN d. Ontario parks - a successful business operating model by ROBERT MOOS e. Managing tourism in the New Zealand protected area system by GORDON CESSFORD AND ANDY THOMPSON f. Customer management in Finland's protected areas by ANNELI LEIVO g. African parks: combining fiscal and ecological sustainability by GILES MULHOLLAND AND PAUL F.J. EAGLES

It's available in PDF here http://www.iucn.org/themes/wcpa/pubs/pdfs/PARKS/parks12.1.pdf (but beware, it's a humungous 27MB!).

Best wishes, Sandra Hails, Ramsar Secretariat
