WLI-Asia regional network launched ... and the final word on monkeys! (01/07/05)
Good morning everyone:
I have two news items today:
1. First some exciting news from Malcolm Whitehead who coordinates the WLI network. Please take the time to read the WLI-Asia report on the WLI home page (see Malcolm's message below). In a 4-day workshop at the Mai Po wetland centre a group of wetland centre experts covered a lot of ground and agreed to establish a Pan-Asian WLI network, developing an action plan for its future development. (If you need a quick reminder of what the WLI network is all about - have a look here http://www.ramsar.org/outreach_wetlandcentres.htm ).
If you are living in Asia, please encourage wetland centres in your country to join the WLI-Asia network and if you are living anywhere else please have a look and consider whether your region might benefit from setting up a regional network to deliver WLI objectives. My congratulations to all the participants for their hard work during the WLI-Asia meeting and, most importantly, for achieving so much in a few days.
You can view the WLI website here http://www.wli.org.uk/ and while visiting please look at a new development on the site - a WLI Resource Pool. This aims to share and exchange examples, materials and case studies relating to aspects of the philosophy, policy, planning, development and implementation of CEPA (communications, education and public awareness) programmes for wetlands - especially those programmes based at or emanating from wetland centres. This is a very useful resource under development.
2. Second, my thanks to all list members who offered suggestions to Harban Singh from Malaysia on the problem of long-tailed macaques at a Ramsar Site, posted to the list on the 23rd of June. I have compiled the replies and posted them on our news page here http://www.ramsar.org/outreach_news.htm.
All for now, with best wishes, Sandra Hails, Ramsar Secretariat

Subject: [wetlandlinkintl-wli] WLI-Asia regional network launched
Dear WLI egroup
A new regional network of WLI - WLI-Asia - was launched in late June at an exploratory meeting held at WWF Mai Po Nature Reserve, Hong Kong. The group invites all Asian wetland centres to become involved. Interim co-facilitation of the group is by the Hong Kong Government's Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD) and WWF-Hong Kong.
You can view (and freely download) the report of the meeting at www.wli.org.uk
All the best
Malcolm
