Good morning All:
Mr Park Jin Hae, CEO of the Gyeongsangnamdo Ramsar Environment Foundation has written to inform the Secretariat of their excellent initiative in organizing a youth Ramsar Convention meeting. The two-day event held on March 28-29 in Changwon, Republic of Korea, brought together 150 high school students from various locations in the country to hold a Youth Model Ramsar Convention as a means to raise awareness about wetlands, wetland conservation, and Ramsar.
The first day was dedicated to presentations about the Convention, how it operates, and its key activities in the Asian region, as well as the procedures to be followed by the students during the Model Ramsar Convention. Students were divided into three committees to discuss, respectively, transboundary wetland issues, wetland loss, and wetland biodiversity. This included developing and amending resolutions on the topic within each group and then, collectively, voting and accepting the amended resolutions.
Through the logistical support from the Gyeongsangnamdo Ramsar Environment Foundation and the work of the meeting organizers, including Mr. Seo Seung Oh, Mr. Maurice Lineman, Dr. Gea Jae Joo, and the student representatives, this presents a good model for others in raising awareness of young people about wetlands, the Ramsar Convention and its processes.
