Vainuupo Jungblut, Ramsar Officer for Oceania based at the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP) in Samoa, recently attended the CBD Regional Workshop for Pacific Countries on preparation of the Fifth National Report, held in Nadi, Fiji, from 22-26 July 2013.

The main highlights of the workshop were the sharing of experiences among countries on the preparation of their fifth national reports, preparations for CBD SBSTTA-17 including identification of national scientific priorities and needs, and practical group work on completing the three sections of the national report. The first day of the workshop focused on background and context-setting information, where the Ramsar Officer carried out a presentation on the need for harmonizing implementation processes of Ramsar, CBD and CMS at the national level, which was well received. In his presentation, participants were encouraged to think strategically about how harmonization can be put in practice within their countries as a way to make effective use of limited human and financial resources and capacity.

Whilst there, Mr Jungblut also took the opportunity to follow up on Ramsar work with the representatives from Nauru, namely, revising their Ramsar accession workplan to reflect new completion dates for activities up to December 2013. Discussions were also held with the representatives of Solomon Islands and the Federated States of Micronesia on joining the Ramsar Convention, which is expected to result in visits to those two countries before the end of 2013. He also held consultations with the National Administrative Authority for Papua New Guinea, the Department of Environment and Conservation, on identifying and confirming Ramsar focal points for their country.
