Lew Young, Senior Regional Advisor for Asia-Oceania,will be visiting Kuwait from 10-16 December to assist the Government of Kuwait with their preparations to accede to the Ramsar Convention. [06/12/2011]

Ramsar Secretary General, Anada Tiéga, along with Maria Rivera, Senior Advisor for The Americas, Sofia Mendez, Regional Assistant for The Americas, and Montse Riera, Administrative Assistant will attend the V Pan-American Regional Meeting of the Convention on Wetlands, 6-10 December 2011, Kingston, Jamaica.  The team will be in country for a few days prior to the meeting. Tobias Salathé, Ramsar Senior Advisor for Europe, will be in the Camargue, France 14-16 November for the 3rd annual meeting of the French Ramsar Site managers and actors, where the charta for the new Association Ramsar France will be signed by the Minister and Ramsar Secretary General Anada Tiéga, regrouping French RS managers and providing them with a new tool to work on the governance, management, promotion and other subjects related to Ramsar Sites. Tobias Salathé, Senior Advisor for Europe, will be in Strasbourg, France 10-11 October presenting Ramsar’s work to this end (with support from Monica Zavagli of the Ramsar STRP) in an expert meeting of the Berne Convention/Council of Europe on biodiversity and climate change.  On 12 October he will be on the island of Mainau (Lake of Constance): making the laudatio for the Euronatur 2011 award winner who is Ramsar Standing Committee member, Goran Gugic.  From 13-15 October at Weil, Germany: keynote to a technical meeting on transboundary nature conservation, focusing on Transboundary Ramsar Sites on the Upper Rhine and the Morava-Dyije-Danube confluence, with support from Gerhard Schwach, Ramsar's National Focal Point in Austria.  [10/10/2011]

Tobias Salathe, Senior Advisor for Europe, will be in Astana, Kazakhstan, 20-23 September, participating in the UNECE 7th ministerial conference on the Environment for Europe “save water, grow green” focusing on sustainable management of water and water-related ecosystems and on greening the economy by mainstreaming the environment into economic development, plus a presentation at the side-event for the launch of the 2nd Assessment of transboundary rivers, lakes and groundwaters by UNECE, Finland and Slovakia. Anada Tiéga, Ramsar Secretary General, will visit the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity–CBD (16 September 2011) in Montreal, Canada and he will attend the 17th Senior Officials Meeting of the United Nations Environment Management Group (EMG), 19 September 2011 in New York. He will also attend some of the UN General Assembly events. On 20 September, 2011, Mr. Tiéga will sign an MOU with the Executive Secretary of CBD and 22 heads of other organizations. This MOU is between international agencies and organizations and the Secretariat of CBD on the implementation of the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020 and the achievement of 2020 Aichi Biodiversity Targets. SG Anada Tiega is in Kota Kinabalu, State of Sabah, Malaysia, to attend the Asian Wetlands Symposium 2011 from 18 to 20 July. He will also meet with Malaysian officials, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), the Director of MAB Programme and many other senior representatives of partners organizations. From 11 to 16 July, Maria Rivera will be visiting Jamaica's AA to discuss the organisation of the Pan-American meeting that will take place from 5-10 July in Kingston, Jamaica. She will then be in Bahamas to discuss the implementation of the Ramsar Convention. [04/07/11]

From 20 to 24 June, Deputy Secretary General Nick Davidson is participating in an expert workshop and CBD Ad Hoc Technical Expert Group (AHTEG) on indicators for the Aichi Targets adopted in the 2010 Nagoya Strategic Plan for Biodiversity, representing the Secretariats of the Ramsar, Migratory Species, CITES and World Heritage Conventions. The Americas team is attending the 2nd Meeting of the Regional Initiative for the Conservation and Wise Use of Mangroves and Coral Reefs in Guayaquil, Ecuador from 14 to 17 June.

14-17 June, Tobias Salathé will participate in a meeting of the organising committee of the “Grado+21” Conference on Mediterranean Wetlands under the Ramsar MedWet Initiative in Agadir, Morocco. From 12 to 18 June, Kati Wenzel, Assistant Advisor for Europe, is taking part in an excursion organized by the Czech Ramsar Committee and an Expert group from Slovakia to several Ramsar Sites in Slovakia. Tobias Salathé, Senior Advisor for Europe, is visiting several Ramsar Site managers in Slovakia and Hungary, 20-27 March 2011, including the RS Orava river and floodplain wetlands, Demanovska and Baradla caves (transboundary with Aggtelek) and Kis-Balaton, contributing to a transnational project of the environmental NGO the Ciconia Foundation and participating in the seminar on "Sustainability aspects of water management and the role of water in development" organised by the Central European University and the Hungarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Budapest on 24 March.

Lew Young, Senior Advisor for Asia - Oceania, will be in Lao DPR from 21-25 March 2011 to attend a workshop on wetland conservation and implementation of the Ramsar Convention for countries in the Lower Mekong River region. The workshop is being organised by IUCN.

He will then be in Cape Town, South Africa from 27 February - 2 March at a Congress bringing together Mayors and City Executives to discuss “Local Climate Solutions for Africa 2011". Mr Tiéga will participate in the celebrations of Ramsar 40th Anniversary in Tehran and Ramsar, Iran from 3-7 March. Deputy SG Nick Davidson is in Edinburgh, Scotland from 19-26 February to take part in a meeting of the Wings over Wetlands (WOW) partnership of Ramsar, African-Eurasian Migratory Waterbird Agreement (AEWA), BirdLife International and Wetlands International for supporting migratory waterbird flyway conservation. He will also attend a meeting of the Convention on Migratory Species (CMS) “Flyways Working Group”as well as the Wetlands International’s triennial Board of Members meeting, which will include a Ramsar 40th anniversary celebration in which he will participate.

Kati Wenzel, Regional Assistant for Europe is attending a “subregional workshop on transboundary water cooperation in Central and Western Europe” from 8 to 10 February in Budapest, Hungary. The workshop is organized by the Hungarian Ministry of Rural Development and the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe, in cooperation with the International Water Assessment Centre (IWAC). Americas regional team, Montse Riera and SG Anada Tiéga are attending a wetland festival in Huatulco, Mexico, from the 31 January to 2 of February 2011 to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Convention in the Americas region. A special celebration on February 2nd will be hosted by Mexico´s President, Felipe Calderon, and the Minister of Environment, Juan Rafael Elvira. Also present will be a broad range of important personalities from within the region and beyond. From 26 to 28 January, Tobias Salathé, Senior Advisor for Europe is attending the MedWet Steering Group meeting in Athens, to review progress of this oldest Ramsar Regional Initiative and to appoint a MedWet Coordinator for the years 2011-2012.

He will then participate in WWD events in Irún, Spain from 1-3 February. He will then take part in the 10th anniversary of the wetland education centre at the urban RS Txingudi at the French border in the Bask County, then in a ministerial event in Madrid organised by our AA. [27/01/11]
 
Kati Wenzel, Assistant Advisor for Europe, is attending a meeting in Geneva on Thursday 27 February to discuss how the Pan European Biological and Landscape Diversity Strategy (PEBLDS) can contribute to the biodiversity conventions' synergies in the region, in particular in terms of facilitating implementation at country level. Lew Young, Senior Regional Advisor for Asia-Oeania will be in Bangkok (Thailand) from 19-21 January to attend a special UN-Water meeting on “Water and UNCSD 2012 (Rio+20)”. He will then be travelling to Iran (I.R. Iran) to attend the 3rd Collaborative Management Board meeting of the Ramsar Regional Regional Centre - Central and West Asia from 22-25 January. [18/01/11]
