Christopher Briggs, new Secretary General to the Ramsar Convention

Gland, Switzerland, 14 August 2013 | In his first weeks as Secretary General, Dr Briggs is holding meetings with all Ramsar staff in Gland, Switzerland and meeting counterparts in IUCN and other partner organizations. He will also be preparing for his participation at the upcoming World Water Week in Stockholm (1-6 September) and other missions to Asia and Africa to better understand the challenges and successes of implementing the Convention on the ground.

Prior to joining the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands, Christopher Briggs was based in Panama as UNDP regional team leader for the Latin American and Caribbean region. The portfolio included wetland projects, many of which are in Ramsar Sites. Covering all aspects of land management, including coastal and inland wetlands, particular attention was focused on how to achieve long term financial support for the continuous supply of ecosystem services and biodiversity goods in the region.

Christopher Briggs’ interest and involvement in wetlands began while working for county wildlife trusts in England after completing his doctorate in marine ecology in the Isle of Man under the University of Liverpool. “Since I started my work as an ecologist in wetlands, I am delighted to return to working on wetlands in my new position” he said.

Dr Briggs, married and father of two boys, speaks English, French and Spanish, the three official languages of the Ramsar Convention. The whole Secretariat team welcomes him and looks forward to working for water and wetlands with him in the years to come.
