Ramsar Hosts European Space Agency Globwetland-II Project Meeting
On 22-23 September, 2011, the Ramsar Secretariat is hosting a progress meeting of the European Space Agency’s “GlobWetland-II” project team. This project is developing remote sensing products and in-country capacity-building for handling earth observation data for a number of Mediterranean Ramsar Parties, focusing on North Africa and the Middle East, and in close collaboration with the Mediterranean Wetlands Observatory led by Station Biologique de la Tour du Valat.
The overarching objective of the GlobWetland II project is to contribute to the set up of a Global Wetlands Observing System (G-WOS) as per the strategy 1.2 of the Ramsar Strategic Plan 2009-2015, Resolution X.1, recently adopted at the 10th meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP-10) of the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands, in Changwon, South Korea.
The GlobWetland II Information system shall be installed at the premises of a number of partner organisations or supporting agencies, with the objective to favour a sustainable exploitation of the system by the Ramsar Contracting Parties and by regional initiatives like MedWet and its Observatory of Mediterranean Wetlands.
More information is posted on the Globwetland website.
